Italian Spring Break

This pilgrimage to Italy offers the opportunity to understand the relationship between art and faith: we will discover Christian Rome in both its religious and archaeological aspects which are intrinsically connected. We then move to Assisi for an incredible taste of the atmosphere where it is still possible to perceive St. Francis’ faith, presence, and love for humanity and creation. Then on to Florence (where we will also learn about local agriculture) and to Venice, exploring them both via fascinating guided walks along ancient roads within the urban centers, visiting the most exquisite cathedrals and neighborhoods of two of the prettiest cities in the world..

Itinerary

Day 1  •  Rome

Arrival at Fiumicino Airport in the morning and transfer to the hotel for registration and lunch. Guided tour of Imperial Rome: Roman Forum, Imperial Forum, Campidoglio, Coliseum (outside visit), Carcer Tullianum, Piazza Venezia and Piazza Navona. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 2  •  Rome

Guided tour of St. Sebastiano’s Catacombs. Transfer to Vatican with guided visit of Vatican Museums with the greatest masterpieces of all time: Raphael’s Rooms and the private living quarters of Pope Julius II, decorated with important frescoes by the great Renaissance painters. The visit will end at the Sistine Chapel, the work of the great master Michelangelo. Visit to St. Peter’s. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 3  •  Rome

Guided visit of the Lateran Complex, including St. John’s Basilica, Sancta Sanctorum and the Cloister. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the oldest church in the West. Optional Roma Cristiana Open Bus tour of Rome or free time. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 4  •  Assisi

We travel to Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis and a special island of peace. With our pastoral assistant we visit the Basilica of St. Francis covered with the incredible paintings of Giotto, the Church of St. Clare and the Church of Mary of Angels, the Porziuncola. Rest of the day is free to explore Assisi on your own. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Assisi.

Day 5  •  Florence

We visit St. Damiano. In the afternoon, transfer to Florence and walking guided tour of the city, passing by the Uffizi and over the Ponte Vecchio, and touching on the main churches: St. Maria Maggiore and St. Croce Basilica, etc. Dinner and overnight in Florence.

Day 6  •  Florence

Free time in the morning. In the afternoon we will visit a farm to learn about the famous local production of wine and oil and we will enjoy a great local tasting dinner. Overnight in Florence.

Day 7  •  Venice

Transfer to Venice and walking visit to the main sites of the city, including the gorgeous Basilica of St. Mark and its open square. Venice is also renowned for architecture, fabrics and gleaming glassworks, all of which we will have the opportunity to experience. Dinner and overnight at hotel out of Venice lagoon.

Day 8  •  Venice

We visit the islands surrounding Venice: Murano, world-famous for the quality of its master glass craftsmen, and Burano, famous for handmade lace production. Rest of the day for walking the city and free time. Dinner and overnight at hotel out of Venice lagoon.

Day 9  •  Venice

After breakfast, transfer to Venice airport, for your international flight back home.
