The Profession of Faith and the calling to Holiness

Learn more about the Year of Faith

Inimitable Rome, site of the testimony of myriad saints, including Saint Peter and Saint Paul, is a city richly nourished by profound, unshakeable faith. Saint Peter’s Cathedral stands here, and the stalwart city has become the proud guardian of the Apostolic Tradition.  This pilgrimage will guide and accompany Christians throughout the Year of Faith in Rome, which has seen the fruit of faith truly borne by saints and martyrs.

The pilgrimage will also cover four other cities, where the legacy of famous saints is particularly evident: Saint Francis, Saint Catherine, Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, and Saint Anthony of Padua. The climax of the Roman visit is the Professio Fidei, the reading of and meditation on the Holy Scriptures. The act of the Professio Fidei will take place on the tomb of Saint Peter in the Basilica.  Listening to the Word of Peter’s successor at the papal audience or during the Angelus in Saint Peter’s Square will help pilgrims experience a renewal not only of individual faith, but of faith shared with the community of the Church.

Because the renewal of the Church passes through the lives of the believers, one duty of the Christian is to experience the faith of those who have gone before him and to become their witness. For this reason, the pilgrimage from Rome passes through Assisi, Siena, San Giovanni Rotondo and Padua, following the footstep of those who, with the help of God, have led blessed lives through the holiness they received.

Itinerary

Day 1  •  Rome

Pilgrims meet with an ORP assistant, who will answer any questions and facilitate the journey to the city center for a panoramic tour of Rome.  Check in at hotel, dinner and overnight. (Dinner included.)

Day 2   •  Rome

Today is dedicated to the preparation for the experience of the Professio Fidei.  In the morning, we visit the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls (including an entrance to the medieval Cloister and the Museum of the Basilica, which preserves documents of the Council Vatican II). In the afternoon, we travel to the Basilica of St. Giovanni in Laterano – where there is a moment of Lectio Divina and Professional preparation – and make a stop at the prison of St. Peter. (Breakfast and dinner included.)

Day 3  •  Rome

We visit the Basilica of St. Peter, where (depending on timing) we may celebrate Mass, the experience of which is richly heightened by the sacred environment. Today we make the Professio Fidei. If this travel day falls on a Sunday, we will participate with the Holy Father in the prayer of the Angelus in St Peter's square. In the afternoon, we have an excursion to Christian and Pagan Rome, including the Fori Imperiali (a walk through the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Capitol). (Breakfast and dinner included.)

Day 4  •  St. Giovanni Rotondo

We depart for Pietrelcina, birthplace and lifelong home of St. Pius.  We spend much of the day exploring the quiet beauty of the town and places sacred to the saint. We continue on to the sanctuary of the Archangel Michael in Monte Sant'Angelo, and from there journey to St. Giovanni Rotondo. (Breakfast and dinner included.)

Day 5  •  St. Giovanni Rotondo

Today is dedicated to our exploration of the sanctuary of St. Giovanni Rotondo.  We have a period of prayer, with the possibility of making the devotions of the Via Crucis, and time devoted to personal reflection, especially on the theme "the year of humility and reconciliation.” We also have the opportunity to make confession at the shrine. (Breakfast and dinner included.)

Day 6  •  Assisi

We spend the day journeying through exquisite Italian forests and fields, and reach our destination in the evening: Assisi, city of St. Francis, Patron Saint of Italy. (Breakfast and dinner included.)

Day 7   •  Assisi

In the morning, we visit the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, and recite the Prayer next to the Porziuncola. We explore the Basilica of St. Francis, retracing the life of the Saint through the frescoes emblazoned on the wall by Giotto, and celebrate Holy Mass. (Breakfast and dinner included.)

Day 8   •  Siena

Today we depart for Siena, and take a short tour of the city: the Cathedral, the Basilica of San Domenico – where the relics of Saint Catherine are preserved – and the Piazza del Campo, where the Corsa del Palio takes place annually. While at the Basilica, we will pause for a moment of reflection on the theme of "acceptance of suffering and the power of prayer." (Breakfast and dinner included.)

Day 9   •  Padua — Venice

We journey to Padua and visit the charming town center, as well as the Basilica of St. Antonio, containing the remains of the Saint.  From here we continue on to Venice, jewel of Italy. (Breakfast and dinner included.)

Day 10  •  Venice

We take a panoramic tour of this gorgeous city on the glittering water.  Here we see St. Mark's Basilica and the bridge of sighs at the front of the square.  We have the possibility of a ferry excursion to the exquisite islands of Murano and Burano. (Breakfast and dinner included.)

Day 11

Transfer to the airport for flight home. (Breakfast included.)
